Leonid Makarovych Kravchuk was born on January 10, 1934, in Velyky Zhityn, Rivne region, Ukraine
Married to Antonina Mikhailovna. Has a son Alexander, two grandchildren – Maria, Andriy, and two great-granddaughters.
Education and scientific activities
Studied at the elementary school of the village of Velyka Zhytina, graduated from a seven-year school in the village of Horodyshche.
In 1953, he graduated with honours in Rivne Cooperative Economics and Law technical school on the speciality «Accounting».
1953-1958 – studied at the Faculty of Economics of the Taras Shevchenko State University of Kyiv, speciality «Political economy», qualification – economist, teacher of political economy.
In 1970, he graduated from the Academy of Social Sciences of the CC CPSU, defended his dissertation on «The essence of profit under socialism and its role in a collective-farm production». Candidate of Economic Studies.

Author of books and many articles in Ukrainian, foreign publications and Internet blogs about Ukraine’s internal and foreign policy. The first President takes an active part in highlighting current events in contemporary politics, society, often comments on the activities of state authorities, the senior government officials, participates in press conferences, round tables.

1967-1970 – graduate student of the Academy of Social Sciences under the CC of the CPSU.
1970-1971 – Head of the department of organizational and party work of the Central Committee of the CPU.
1971-1972 – Inspector of the Central Committee of the CPU.
1972-1976 – Assistant Secretary of the Central Committee of the CPU.
1976-1980 – first deputy head of the campaigning and propaganda department of the Central Committee of the CPU.
1980-1988 – Head of the campaign and propaganda department of the Central Committee of the CPU.
In March 1980 he was elected a People’s Deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. Total experience of deputy activity is 24 years.
1988-1989 – Head of the ideological department of the Central Committee of the CPU.
He conducted a public (on television) discussion with representatives of the People’s Movement of Ukraine, offered principles of cooperation with the movement.
1989-1990 – candidate to the members of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine, secretary of the Central Committee of the CPU.
In 1990-1991 he was a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party Central Committee.
June-July 1990 – second secretary of the CPU.
October 24, 1990 – Chairman of the Constitutional Commission of the Ukrainian SSR. Member of the Constitutional Commission of Ukraine in 2016. He initiated and became the organizer of the round table, where he discussed the adoption of constitutional changes regarding local self-government, decentralization of power.
1990-1991 – Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of the USSR, Ukraine.
On August 24, 1991, under the chairmanship of Leonid Makarovich, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted a historical document – Act of the State Independence of Ukraine.
On December 1, 1991, a nationwide referendum took place on the territory of the former USSR on the Act of the proclamation of Ukraine’s independence. 84.2% of voters participated in it, of which 90.3% voted for Ukraine’s independence. On the first-ever national presidential election in Ukraine on December 1, Leonid Kravchuk became the First President elected in the first round, gaining 61.6% of the vote.
1990-1991 – the member of the Central Committee of the CPSU, member of the Federation Council, member of the State Council of the USSR. In August 1991, he opposed the coup d’état in Moscow (GK PP), leading the struggle of the Ukrainian people for independence.
Actively supported the creation of the Local Orthodox Church in Ukraine. In 1991, the Local Council at that time, the Unified UOC, unanimously supported autocephaly and embarked on efforts to achieve this goal. He was chairman of the Organizing Committee for the celebration of the 1020th anniversary of the Сhristening of Rus-Ukraine in 2008.
On February 26, 1992, the Helsinki Final Act signed the Helsinki capital, which initiated the integration of Ukraine with Europe.
On June 26, 1994, he participated in the presidential election. According to the results of the election, Leonid Kravchuk supported 45% of voters, which was not enough to win.
Since 1994 – Honorary Chairman of the All-Ukrainian Foundation for International Communication «Ukrainian People’s Embassy».
1995 – headed the Board of Trustees of the Ukrainian Humanitarian Lyceum of the Kyiv National University. T. Shevchenko.
1997 – Chairman of the Ukrainian Peace Council (formerly Ukrainian Republican Peace Protection Committee) and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of FC Dynamo Kyiv (Kyiv).
July 23, 1998 – President of the Ukrainian Society «Intelligence of the Nation».
Since 1999 – co-chairman of the All-Ukrainian Association of Democratic Forces «Zlagoda».
Since 2000 – President of the Ukrainian Municipal Club.
Since 2001 – President of the All-Ukrainian Charitable Organization «Mission «Ukraine – Known».
Since 2006 – Honorary President of the «Ukraine-China» Society.
Since 2008 – Head of the Public Organization «Council of Elders».
In 2011 he was elected chairman of the special subsidiary body under the President of Ukraine of the Constitutional Assembly. As a result of the work, a draft of the new Constitution of Ukraine was prepared and approved. This year – Honorary President of the Perspective Ukraine Foundation.
In 2015, he became the head of the NGO «Movement for Ukraine to NATO».
He initiated the creation and work of round tables during the Revolution of Dignity and sought ways to reconcile the confrontational forces in Ukraine.
From 2017 – Member of the Honorary Board of Honors «Order of St. Panteleimon».
May 29, 2018 – Honorary Head of the Center for Support of Chinese Investors and Entrepreneurs in Ukraine.

Large-scale documentary project «Ukraine. The starting point» is devoted to the twentieth anniversary of the independence of Ukraine and the anniversary of the collapse of the Soviet Union. The epochal events of 1989-1991 forever changed the world geopolitical situation. Although they were decisive for millions of people, for a wider audience these events still remain in the shadows.
